Scales Mound United Methodist Church is starting up its “Young at Heart” community gatherings on Tuesday, June 27, at 1:30 p.m. with the fabulous “Accordion Divas!” Denise Stadel, Colleen Yonda, Vicky Barclay and Vivian Eaton will treat the audience to some energetic oldies but goodies, and answer all your questions about accordions. Will a polka break out? Hard to say. Dense, Colleen and Vicki met as members of the Galena Community Hand Bell Choir, and shared a love of music. Colleen taught herself to play accordion, Vicki took accordion lessons as a child, Vivian has played accordion for dance bands in the Mt. Carroll area and Denise said, “why not?” Together, they all make beautiful music! Scales Mound UMC holds “Young at Heart” gatherings on the fourth Tuesday of every month. Each month they will have refreshments, entertainment and speakers and great community with one another. They invite anyone who is ‘young at heart’ to join them and tell your friends! Galena Center for the Arts announces “Art That Stands Out in its Field” Outdoor Scarecrow Exhibit for the month of October. The public is invited to participate. Each Fall, the Galena Center for the Arts encourages the community to create scarecrows to display either at their home or business, or on the grounds of the Center. The annual outdoor exhibit, titled “Art that Stands Out in its Field”, will run from Sunday, October 1 through Tuesday, October 31. Participants can use whatever materials they prefer, with the knowledge that they will be displayed outdoors for several weeks. The scarecrows will be reviewed for appropriateness. Participants are requested to either drop their scarecrow off at the Center to be displayed, or contact the Center to be put on the scarecrow map. There will be a Scarecrow Building Party at the Center on Saturday, September 23, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Participants are instructed to bring their own scarecrow clothing, accessories and/or decorations. Wooden scarecrow frames will be available for $10 to cover the cost of the wood.
