Around 100 Elizabeth High School alumni sang their school song, reminisced, and crowned a king and queen at a gathering at Cajun Jack’s on Saturday, July 23. Margaret Wurster (Class of 1951) and Stan Backenkeller (Class of 1962) served as Queen and King. Julie Wilson Nesbitt traveled the farthest, coming from the Seattle, Wash. area. This event has become an annual summer must-do for all Terrapins.

Eagle Ridge Resort & Spa was recently awarded the 2022 Employer of Older Workers Award by the American Legion Department of Illinois and the American Legion National Veterans Employment & Education Commission. With this award, the Commission recognizes one employer in each state for an outstanding record in the hiring and retention of older workers. The American Legion Fickbohm-Hissem Post 193 in Galena nominated Eagle Ridge. Eagle Ridge joins winners from each state to be considered for this honor at the national level, which will be determined next year. The Commission has been recognizing employers with the award since 1958 when it saw the importance of older workers in the future labor force as fewer young people entered the labor market. “Employ the Older Worker Week” was established by the American Legion and is observed the last full week of each September. The week recognizes the vital role of older workers in the workforce. The Elizabeth Community fair celebrated its 101st anniversary last week as it hosted livestock shows, entertainment and a community parade. The River Ridge FFA Chapter was a part of the fair as well as it hosted the Ag Olympics for elementary students. As a part of the Ag Olympics, students had several events for kids ages 4-10 to participate in. There were hoppy horse races, 3-legged races, a water balloon toss, face painting and the very popular freezie-pop giveaway. The FFA students hosted the event with the support of the Elizabeth Community Fair Association. The events were offered during the Kiddie Tractor pull sponsored by the Jo Daviess County Farm Bureau Young Leaders.
