Ayden Wells is the artist of the month at Galena High School. The senior is photographed with her acrylic painting entitled, “Magical Places.” The piece is an entry for the Euleila Art & Poetry contest. The inspiration was to paint buildings that resonate with the specific artist. For Wells, those buildings are from her favorite movies and books. Choosing significant locations from J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter, Dr. Seuss’ Oh the Places You’ll Go and The Brother Grimm’s Rapunzel. Her favorite mediums to work with are acrylic paints and ceramics because it is versatile and allows her to tangibly bring her ideas to life. Art has been present throughout her life and she makes it, “because it allows me to express feelings and ideas that I have in my head, and make them into an interpretive art piece that others can relate to.” The independent art student is currently a member of the National Art Honor Society. Her teacher, Irene Thraen-Borowski runs the Galena chapter. Not only is her outstanding work recognized in the NAHS, but she also participates in service opportunities. Each NAHS member gives back to the community in art-related service acts. She said she will continue painting and participating in organizations that value art after high school.
GHS artist of the month
This piece of art by Galena High School senior Reagan Simpson, will be part of a student art exhibit, “Collective Memory,” supported by six area high schools: Galena-Jo Daviess Career Technical Education Academy, East Dubuque, Galena, River Ridge, Scales Mound and Stockton. The exhibit opens Thursday, Feb. 2 at the Galena Center for the Arts with a reception from 5-6 p.m. The exhibit runs through February.
