On Monday, Jan. 9, three East Dubuque High School seniors, from left, Madeline Heitkamp, Kaylee Nelson and Wil Quinn, participated in the annual Dorian Vocal Festival at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. Nearly 1,000 students from across the Midwest participated in this choral singing festival, singing a variety of excellent repertoire, all while being fully immersed in the collegiate experience. The songs they performed were Shout Unto God by Heather Sorenson, Stars I Shall Find by Victor Johnson, and Bridge Over Troubled Water arranged by Kirby Shaw. The sopranos and altos sang a piece, Listen by Reena Esmail, and the tenors and basses sang a piece, Imaliyam, arranged by Lhente-Mari Pitout. Quinn also participated in a lesson with a member of the Luther College voice faculty.

Natalie Garcia Ayala is the artist of the month at Galena High School. The senior says she enjoys being creative and showing simple things and wants her work to have meaning and have symbols. Garcia is interested in pursuing graphic design or baking/pastries. She became interested in art during middle school. Her teacher was John Schober. Garcia now enjoys working in clay, paint, pencils and on the computer. She has been helping her mom bake cakes for family members since she was four or five years of age.

The bust of Sgt. Henry H. Taylor was delivered to the Rocky Mountain Bronze Shop, Loveland Colo., Dec. 12 by two Fickbohm-Hissem Post 193 American Legionnaires, Cmdr. Jerry Howard and Thom Mercker. The bust will be bronzed and returned by next April. Plans for the unveiling are for April 29 at Grant Park during the U.S. Grant Pilgrimage. The Boy Scouts, local veterans organizations and the 45th Volunteer Illinois Infantry are planning to attend the ceremony. Handing off the bust, from left, are Mercker, bronze shop owners Amy and Carey Hosterman and Howard. Taylor is Jo Daviess County’s sole Medal of Honor recipient.
