Macy Schulz is the artist of the month at Galena High School. The junior is photographed with her relief tile. The project was to include the artist’s name and other personal touches. The tile she created depicts an eye and other designs. Schulz said, “it was an exploratory piece because I never worked with clay before.” Her favorite type of art to make is realistic art, with her preferred medium being a pencil. She says creating art is calming to her and she loves to use her imagination to create things that other people deem weird.

Maja Rijpma, daughter of Kerri and Jorden Rijpma, completed “1000 Books Before Kindergarten” at the Galena Public Library. With the help of her parents, Maja read 1,000 books. Sumr Al-Hamdani is the artist of the month at Galena High School. The junior is photographed with her painting entitled, “Dance.” The piece is an entry for the National Art Honor Society art show. The theme is the art of music and her painting depicts a fairy being mesmerized by the music, even though she doesn’t know where it is coming from. On her inspiration, she said, “all types of music can do that for someone, it can make them feel comfortable and with themselves.” Although she does not want to put a label on her favorite mediums, she enjoys making cartoon-style art and portraits. She thinks art is important because, “it allows you to express yourself and bring attention to problems occurring within our world. It gives people an outlet, allowing them to feel free and comfortable with themselves.”
