Ten Galena High School students participated in the Galena VFW Voice of Democracy essay contest, “Why Is the Veteran Important?” On Jan. 3 Post members presented monetary awards to all participants. First-place winner was Jenna Smith. She advances to district competition at Belvidere, Jan. 21 and received $4300. Participants included, back, from left, VFW Quartermaster Dick Wearmouth, Jenna Smith, Reagan Simpson, Abby Ehrler, Jakob Schmidt, Sam Eaton, Jacob Furlong and VFW Comdr. Randy Baysinger of Stockton Auto Supply–NAPA Auto Parts recently donated $500 to Laurie Gothard-Zueger, left, in support of the Stockton SNOW (Student Nutrition Outreach Works) program. He also donated $500 to Sharon Madden, right, a representative of the Stockton Food Pantry. The SNOW program works in partnership with the Stockton High School Servant Leaders, who provide nutritious food for students in need of supplemental food over the weekend. The food pantry operates Monday through Friday on a personal appointment basis by calling 218-556-3822, 815-947-2164, 815-238-5187 or 262-914-6705.

East Dubuque High School students Liliana Alvarado, left, and Meishka Roepke are recipients of a community-based scholarship that will pay half of their 2024 school trip to Europe. The financial help is based on an essay/video discussing the impacts of travel and financial need. Ten students applied for the trip. Teacher Alice Lundh who is organizing the trip said her goal is to endow a scholarship that will support student travel in the future.
