April sales tax numbers show impact of COVID
GALENA–Jo Daviess County released its April 2020 sales tax receipts received from the Illinois Department of Revenue on Tuesday, July 14.
Jo Daviess County has broken down its sales revenue into its quarterly reporting, but has taken the reporting a step further and has compared the March and April numbers of the past two years to detail the impact of COVID on the county.
According to sales tax figures the county has seen a 17.4 percent decrease in the months of March and April compared to March and April 2019 with $352,564 in sales tax revenue compared to $426,736 last year.
According to data presented, Apple River is the only community in the county that experienced an increase in sales tax revenue.
Menominee and Elizabeth saw the largest decreases in revenue. Galena’s sales tax revenue was down over $35,000 from last March and April as those two months this year saw a revenue of $156,330 compared to $193,105 last year. Statewide the March through April numbers are down 18.8 percent.
The sales tax change for March and April per municipality are:
•Apple River, 1.0 percent increase.
•East Dubuque, 19.5 percent decrease.
•Elizabeth, 32.9 percent decrease.
•Galena, 19.0 percent decrease.
•Hanover, 29.3 percent decrease.
•Menominee, 45.3 percent decrease.
•Nora, 0.8 percent decrease.
•Scales Mound, 19.2 percent decrease.
•Stockton, 10.8 percent decrease.
•Warren, 2.8 percent decrease.
Overall, the year has seen a 10.3 percent decrease compared to the first four months of 2019.
