Jo Daviess County’s sales tax numbers down in March

GALENA–The March and first quarter sales tax numbers have been released by Jo Daviess County and highlight an expected drop due to COVID-19.

 

First quarter

The numbers from the first quarter of 2020 show a 7.1 percent drop in sales tax figures across the county. Only the villages of Nora and Elizabeth saw an increase during the first three months of the year.

Galena’s county sales tax numbers were down 5.2 percent during the first quarter with total figures of $241,063 that’s a decrease from $254,282 during the first quarter of 2019.

Other communities in the county saw varied decreases as well:

•Apple River–down 11.9 percent

•East Dubuque:–down 6.3 percent.

•Elizabeth–up 3.3 percent.

•Hanover–down 37.5 percent.

•Menominee–down 52.3 percent.

•Nora–up 35.5 percent.

•Scales Mound–down 0.9 percent.

•Stockton–down 13.7 percent.

•Warren–down 5.0 percent.

The county figures equate to a decrease of nearly $40,000 compared to 2019’s first quarter.

Statewide figures were down 2.3 percent, a decrease of nearly $9 million.

March

The county began tracking figures in March that detail the impact of COVID on the county’s sales tax.

The March figures show Nora as the only community with an increase during that month.

Overall the county saw a 16.1 percent decrease in sales tax between March 2019 and March 2020.

The percent change in sales tax figures for communities in Jo Daviess County are:

•Apple River–down 29.7 percent.

•East Dubuque–down 12.6 percent.

•Elizabeth–down 21.4 percent.

•Galena–down 18.2 percent.

•Hanover–down 26.0 percent.

•Menominee–down 54.0 percent.

•Nora–up 5.9 percent.

•Scales Mound–down 17.6 percent.

•Stockton–down 15.4 percent.

•Warren–down 5.3 percent.

Galena experienced a decrease of over $17,000 in sales tax revenue during the month of March.

The county as a whole had a decrease of nearly $34,000.

Statewide figures were down 13.6 percent during the month of March, a drop of $21 million compared to March 2019.
