Disease and death in the Old Mining District: germs, bacteria, viruses

The Galena Gazette and Midwest Medical Center published a special section in the Gazette in 2019, “Influenza—Looking Back: Lessons Learned in 2018 & 1918.” “Influenza” was a popular read in its own right. Then came the Covid-19 pandemic. People again reached for “Influenza” to see what lessons might be learned and mistakes avoided. Many diseases have significantly impacted the tri-state area. The Gazette is featuring them in a series of stories. The series began with smallpox, followed by tuberculosis, then cholera. This final article looks at other ways people in the Old Mining District became ill, sometimes deathly so.
