It's ready: Registration site now operating for Galena Virtual Family Fitness Weekend

It’s up and ready and the page can be found at bit.ly/3kvOwmw. The URL doesn’t tell you much, but it’s the quickest way to tell you how you can get to the registration site for the Galena Virtual Family Fitness Weekend, Sept. 12-13.

You might recall that a few weeks ago, I used this space to share how a popular September event, the Heroes for History Stair Challenge had morphed into a family fitness weekend all due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The formal “Heroes” event has been cancelled, one of many popular fall events here. With the museum operating with diminished staff and all the restrictions in place due to the pandemic, it was going to be too difficult holding the stairway challenge.

But instead of cancelling, the historical society, thanks to the amazing efforts of Denise Spielman, Frances Rivoire and Jean Matthiessen and the support of GOATS Cycling of Galena, this event is expanding into a community fitness weekend.

Just as the stairway challenge provided an athletic challenge, Participants can create their own athletic challenge or activity that fits their needs or the needs of their family. The whole purpose is to get out and engage in some type of physical activity and be part of a community activity.

And that activity could involve walking, biking, running, kayaking or playing tennis or engaging in some other type of physical activity. And you can engage in this activity on either of both days and in the place of your choosing including Galena, The Galena Territory, Chicago or Harpswell, Maine.

Virtual events such as this are taking place all over the country as traditional running and biking fundraising events have been cancelled.

This family fitness weekend event is also a fundraiser for the historical society as well as emergency service organizations and is being held following Sept. 11 in honor of those brave citizens who died in the horrible events on that day 19 years ago.

I hope you consider participating in the Galena Virtual Family Fitness weekend. You need to visit bit.ly/3kvOwmw to register and make a donation. Those who make a donation are eligible for door prizes.
