Event at Galena Square kick off Drive Electric Week

Posted

GALENA–Dozens of Illinois and Iowa electric vehicle drivers and enthusiasts will gather for a tail-pipe free tailgate party on Sept. 14, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Galena Square shopping center near the Galena Secretary of State Facility. Electric vehicle owners will offer rides and share their experiences with visitors to highlight the clean-air benefits and cost-savings of electric cars. The event is part of the fifth annual National Drive Electric Week. Galena’s mayor, Terry Renner, has proclaimed the week of Sept. 14-22 to be Drive Electric Week in the city and calls on all residents to support the aims and goals of the National Drive Electric Week efforts.

Sixteen vehicles representing seven different models including Tesla, Chevy, Ford and Kia are represented with over 275,000 electric miles driven. Speakers from Citizen’s Utility Board, Illinois Renewable Energy Association and Arrow Energy will give presentations about their organizations and the Galena Green Designation Committee will award certifications to qualifying green businesses and the first green restaurant in the area.

Jo-Carroll Energy will display their hybrid bucket truck and weather permitting there will be solar cooking demos. Children’s activities, raffle prizes, food by Tammy’s Piggly Wiggly and live music will make this a family-friendly way to learn about sustainability and the latest transportation technology.

Immediately after, the electric vehicles will go for a silent, emission-free cruise down Main Street.
