County board approves 23 grants for businesses

GALENA–The Jo Daviess County Board at its May 20 meeting approved 23 grants, totaling $40,214 as part of the county’s small business stabilization grant program.

The board awarded the grants without much discussion. Some businesses were not awarded grants due to issues with their application or not meeting the requirements for the grant.

To be eligible for the grant, the business must be deemed non-essential under the stay-at-home order. They must operate out of a brick-and-mortar location and the business is not able to pay for rent, mortgage or utilities. The grantees had to meet the definition of a small business and had to be denied assistance from the Paycheck Protection Program.

Qualifying expenses were rent or mortgage and utility fees including electric, gas, telephone, internet, garbage service and water service.

Changes to grant

The small business stabilization grant program has been reopened by the county with the program open to all businesses that operate out of a brick-and-mortar location. Bed and breakfasts, home-based salon and spas or barbershops and home-based daycare are allowed to apply for funds through the program.

Round two of applications will be accepted until Friday, June 12 at 4 p.m.
