Spectators rolled out of bed early to make it out to Eagle Ridge by 5 a.m. on Saturday, June 17, for The Great Galena Balloon Race. This weekend event, which started Friday, June 16, and ended Sunday, June 18, had several events besides racing including music, inflatables, an art show and a car show. Come meet early Fever River settlers! The Women of Courage and Commitment will present strong ladies who settled early Galena, known in the 1820s as the Fever River Settlement. They will be sharing their stories Sunday, July 9, at 3 p.m. at Hawk Valley Retreat and Cottages. Ticket price is $20, which includes a beverage and light refreshments. Reservation required. Scales Mound United Methodist Church is starting up its “Young at Heart” community gatherings on Tuesday, June 27, at 1:30 p.m. with the fabulous “Accordion Divas!” Denise Stadel, Colleen Yonda, Vicky Barclay and Vivian Eaton will treat the audience to some energetic oldies but goodies, and answer all your questions about accordions. Will a polka break out? Hard to say. Dense, Colleen and Vicki met as members of the Galena Community Hand Bell Choir, and shared a love of music. Colleen taught herself to play accordion, Vicki took accordion lessons as a child, Vivian has played accordion for dance bands in the Mt. Carroll area and Denise said, “why not?” Together, they all make beautiful music! Scales Mound UMC holds “Young at Heart” gatherings on the fourth Tuesday of every month. Each month they will have refreshments, entertainment and speakers and great community with one another. They invite anyone who is ‘young at heart’ to join them and tell your friends!
