Ten Galena High School students participated in the Galena VFW Voice of Democracy essay contest, “Why Is the Veteran Important?” On Jan. 3 Post members presented monetary awards to all participants. First-place winner was Jenna Smith. She advances to district competition at Belvidere, Jan. 21 and received $4300. Participants included, back, from left, VFW Quartermaster Dick Wearmouth, Jenna Smith, Reagan Simpson, Abby Ehrler, Jakob Schmidt, Sam Eaton, Jacob Furlong and VFW Comdr. George Petitgout; and front, from left, Samantha Wienen, Julia Townsend, Maia Kropp and Ayden Wells. Ehrler placed second, $250; Townsend, third, $200; Simpson, fourth, $150; Wienen, fifth, $100; with the others receiving $75 each.
GHS Voice of Democracy essay contest participants
Maya Dickerson (center) earned the Kim Brashaw Servant Leadership Award. During the closing event for the Highland Community College (HCC) Servant Leadership event Sunday, April 24, the Galena High School senior was honored for her service to the community. To the left is Dan Dick, the coordinator of High School Servant Leadership at HCC. To the right is Nancy Brashaw, Kim’s grandmother. Kim, a participant in the HCC Servant Leadership Program, died in a car accident in 2011. The honor is given in her memory.

Galena FFA competes in mechanics
On Thursday, April 20 in the Galena High School gymnasium, the Galena Area Chamber of Commerce hosted a job fair. For the first two hours, the job fair was open only to high school students, but the last three hours, it was open to the public. 17 businesses participated, bringing along information and applications for open positions. The businesses that attended were Apple Canyon Lake, Galena Territory Association, City of Galena, Jo-Carroll Energy, Chestnut Mountain Resort, Keller Williams-The Danielle Cline Group, Eagle Ridge Resort and Spa, Kreider Services, Fried Green Tomatoes, Mediacom, Furst Staffing, Midwest Senior Care Center, Galena Cellars Winery and Vineyard, Riverview Center, Galena Center for the Arts, The Country Experience, and The Workshop. Here, Stephanie Beck, representing the Galena Center for the Arts, passed out internship information to high schoolers Kallan Kropp, Dani Rae Hulscher and Xela Weber.
