Twelve members of the River Ridge FFA Chapter traveled to Forreston to compete in the Section One Horticulture CDE on Wednesday, March 22. This contest tests students on their knowledge of both horticulture and floriculture. Students had to identify 30 different plants, judge plants for retail sale, identify landscaping equipment and take a written test on their overall knowledge of horticulture. The students’ favorite portion of the evening, though, was the portion of the contest where they had to create their own floral design from scratch. Students selected what materials to use and how to arrange them into a centerpiece. The FFA Wildcats placed first out of eight teams. Graci Vanderheyden led the team with a second-place finish overall. Other River Ridge students in the top 10 were Cora Boop (fifth), Isaac Rife (sixth), Katie Cobine (seventh) and Lucas Holland (ninth). The Benton Community Development Corporation granted $4,000 to the Benton Zephyr trap team for equipment needs in a recent check presentation. Benton trap team receives donation
Ben Behlke, a 2018 Galena High School graduate, was selected as a recipient of the Chancellor’s Medallion at UW-Platteville’s 31st annual leadership awards held on April 22. The Chancellor’s Medallion recognizes an individual for outstanding leadership by a graduating senior.
