On Friday, April 21, three students from Galena High School traveled to Bloomington/Normal to compete in the IHSA State Journalism Competition. Senior Sam Eaton competed in the Sports Writing Category. Senior Jenna Smith competed and brought home a second-place medal in Headline Writing and a fifth-place medal in Review Writing. Senior Kennedy Trautsch earned hardware in the Editorial Writing Category, coming home with the third-place medal. Gerald Speer, former River Ridge history teacher and current president and curator of the Elizabeth Historical Society, returned to teaching River Ridge students once again on April 20 as students participated in their annual local history field trip. Speer spoke to students outside the Elizabeth Historical Society. Students also visited Winston Tunnel and the Old Blacksmith Shop in Galena.

River Ridge’s sixth grade STEM Class finished their dragster project on May 11. Evalynn Doms took first place, Dominick Defilippo took second and Alex Navarro won most aesthetically pleasing.

Senior Rive Ridge FFA member Ashley Carroll, right, recently qualified for state in the Job Interview Leadership Development Event. She prepared documents needed for a professional job interview creating a cover letter, completing a job application, crafting a resume and a thank you follow-up letter followed by a phone and in-person interview. FFA members must place first or second in the section contest before moving on to districts. The top three participants qualify for the state contest held in conjunction with the State FFA Convention in Springfield in June. Carroll just completed a year of service as club president and plans on studying pre-veterinary medicine at Iowa State University. River Ridge FFA qualifies two for state
The Stockton School District broke ground on May 18 for the district’s new middle school addition. The project will officially begin on May 26 and will be completed in early April.
